DESCRIPTION
Assemblage is creating art from materials not typically intended as art materials, also referred to as a form of outsider art called Found Object Art. Think of it as a three-dimensional version of collage, commonly created from repurposed everyday objects, recycled junk, natural objects, and beach finds.

In this two-day, hands-on workshop, teaching artist Steve Parmelee will cover the fundamentals of assemblage, from collecting to construction, through discussions, demonstrations and in-class projects. We will approach different design concepts using repurposed items and learn how to attach a wide variety of materials with applicable cold fastening techniques and adhesives.

Class participants will also become familiar with appropriate tools to work with wood, metal, ceramic, organic, and synthetic objects. Engineering solutions to construction challenges with options like screws, nuts and bolts, wire, threaded rod, and epoxy will be evaluated. And we’ll look at design principles including consistency, color, and scale to make clean cohesive compositions, as well as discuss the inherent metaphors and stories embodied in certain objects when curating a project.

SUPPLY INFORMATION
Basic objects, fasteners, and adhesives are provided with the materials fee. Tools will be available for student use.

Students are invited to bring their own found objects to incorporate if they wish.
